Patron Saint of archeologists, archivists, Bible scholars, librarians, libraries, schoolchildren, students, and translators.St. Jerome (c.347–420) was a prominent Christian scholar and translator, best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate. Born in Stridon, a town in the Roman province of Dalmatia (modern-day Croatia), Jerome was educated in Rome and became a priest. His scholarly work began with his translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew and the New Testament from Greek into Latin, making the scriptures accessible to a wider audience in the Western Roman Empire.
Jerome's life was marked by a deep commitment to asceticism and theological study. He spent a significant part of his life in Bethlehem, where he established a monastic community and continued his scholarly work. His extensive writings include commentaries on biblical texts, letters, and theological treatises. Jerome's contributions to Christian scholarship earned him recognition as one of the Church Fathers, and he was later declared a Doctor of the Church.
Prayer: Saint Jerome, God gave you a unique calling and used you to provide the Church with a foundational understanding of the Scriptures. Your dedication to prayer, asceticism, and study clearly shows your love for God and His Church. Please pray for me, that I will come to the same depth of love for the Scriptures as you did so that I will also come to the same love of God that you had. Saint Jerome, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You.
